The home sick fans came in their numbers in Edmonton on Saturday. Tuku thrilled the massive crowd which was first treated to BBQ at around 6pm before hitting the dance floor. An estimated 800 people which was a record on its own with some travelling from as far as 1 200km out of the town attended.
Tuku who had earlier on insisted through his interviews that he was “still the same Oliver ready to deliver good Zimbabwean music” did not waste any time as he invaded the stage right on time. On seeing the lanky singer, fans went wild. Some screamed Dhara while others called him by his totem “Samanyanga” as well as other sobriquets associated with the “Tozeza” hitmaker.
Tuku’s playlist was a mixed bag of old and new songs. Mid-song he would perform his trademark katekwe dance. The majority of fans were pleased with the order at both gigs with security and refreshments readily available.
Organised by Tinos “Slicey T” Viriri of Slice international, the gig lived up to its billing and left fond memories.
“It was indeed a great experience promoting my mentor and superstar Tuku. It was one of the most successful shows in Canada and a huge milestone thanks to support from co-partners LK production and Dee Jay Xee Entertainment for their professional standards.
Urban grooves is still my main worry and I asked Tuku where the youths were getting it wrong. I wanted to know if there was anything that we could do to assist and I promised to be open with them anytime through various social networks like email and WhatsApp,” Slicey T said.
Later, Slicey T through his non-profit organisation donated cash to Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton and Chinyaradzo Children’s Home.
Director of projects Tecla Imbayarwo, told the crowd that Tuku would return to Canada on August 17 for a show in Calgary. Another show featuring South African Bojo Mujo is slated for June 29. — Online.
