She has just been honoured as the Female Amateur Golfer of the Year. The Royal Harare golfer is part of the three-member team that is scheduled to leave for Kenya this morning to take part in the tournament that draws several African countries.

Mubaiwa said her award will be a morale-booster to her and the team.

“I am so happy that I was recognised for my performances and I now look forward to the next event, the All-Africa Challenge Trophy,” said Mubaiwa.
“I believe we have a strong team and that can do well against several African countries. We are looking forward to improve from last year’s performance where we finished third.”

Zimbabwe will be represented by Mubaiwa, Aullia Alfazema and Shamiso Makwara in the tourney at the Muthaiga Golf Course in Nairobi, Kenya.

The event was last held in Botswana where Zimbabwe finished third behind South Africa and Zambia.

Sport, Arts and Culture Deputy Minister Thabetha Kanengoni-Malinga, who was guest of honour at the awards ceremony, challenged golf stakeholders to create programmes to ensure the country continues to produce world-class golfers.

“I thank the Zimbabwe Golf Association, Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union, Zimbabwe Junior Golf Association, Professional Golfers Association and various other golf affiliated associations which continue to put in extra time and effort, in raising the standards and popularising the sport of golf, and other golf clubs around the country for the good work done thus far,” said Kanengoni-Malinga.

“Further, I applaud all golf stakeholders’ initiatives towards introducing golf to schoolgoing children through various Junior golf programmes. Government recognises the importance of sports in the promotion of self-discipline, good health, patriotism and national unity.

“Moreover, sport offers opportunities for gainful employment for our people. It is in appreciation of the importance of sport that government has continued to set aside an increasing amount of funding for sports development.”
