Mudzuri into the party’s national executive council.
Some of the MDC-T heavyweights who were appointed into the national executive are Mrs Kerry Kay the wife of MDC-T legislator for Marondera Central Ian Kay, Bulawayo South MP Eddie Cross, Professor Eliphas Mukono-weshuro, Concelia Chinanzvavana and Ms Thabitha Khumalo among others.
Eng Mudzuri was left as an ordinary card-carrying member after losing his position to former spokesperson Mr Nelson Chamisa at the recent congress in Bulawayo.
Eng Mudzuri was brought back with 14 other members of Mr Tsvangirai’s inner-circle known as the “kitchen cabinet”. Addressing journalists after the party’s national council meeting at Harvest House yesterday, MDC-T spokesperson Mr Douglas Mwonzora said the selection of the 15 political members was done in accordance with the party’s constitution.
“The national council later formally received the new members of the national executive committee elected in accordance with the constitution of the party at the third congress in Bulawayo.
“In terms of the constitution, each of the 12 provinces elects two members into the national executive committee. The national council, guided by the recommendations of the national standing committee also elected party portfolio secretaries,” he said.
Mr Mwonzora said the decision to increase the number of executive members was a result of a constitutional amendment reached at the party’s congress.
He said Mr Tsvangirai did not recommend any member to the national executive but it was the decision of the party’s standing committee.
It is, however, understood that although MDC-T made some constitutional amendments, the issue regarding the increase of national executive members was never discussed.
Mr Tsvangirai allegedly unilaterally made the decision to quell divisions in the party.
The MDC-T congress in Bulawayo was marred by clashes between party supporters over candidates.
