PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe arrived in Maputo yesterday ahead of Mozambique’s 40th Independence celebrations today.
Mozambique celebrates its independence from Portuguese colonial rule annually on June 25.
The Zimbabwean leader, who is also the SADC and African Union chairman, was welcomed at the Maputo International Airport by Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Mozambique, Major General Nicholas Mahuhuba Dube, and embassy staff.
President Mugabe – making his first trip to Mozambique since Filipe Nyusi became President in January this year – will join several heads of state and government invited to the celebrations.
After its independence in 1975, the neighbouring country battled with internal disturbances from Renamo rebels that have since been resolved with the help of its neighbours, chiefly Zimbabwe.
The commemorations are being held under the theme: ‘Consolidating Unity, Peace and Progress.’
Mozambique has in recent years become a haven for investment on the back of its abundant natural resources.
The country recently discovered natural gas deposits.
Zimbabwe and Mozambique not only share a border but a common history of struggle against colonialsim.
The milestone four-decade independence celebrations would be held at Machava Stadium in Maputo.
