Mukuru backs landmark 5th St John’s Derby Day Festival

FINTECH giant Mukuru has returned as title sponsor of the St John’s Mukuru Derby Day Sports Festival, as the event marks its fifth edition with an expanded national and regional footprint.

The 2026 festival coincides with the 40th anniversary of St John’s College, adding further significance to what has become one of Zimbabwe’s premier school sports showcases. The financial services platform’s renewed backing demonstrates growing corporate confidence in school sports as both a development pathway and a community unifier.

This year’s festival will feature 49 teams competing across rugby, football, and hockey, drawing participation from across Zimbabwe, as well as the visiting side St Alban’s College from South Africa. They will join schools from Matabeleland, Manicaland, Midlands, Mashonaland, and Harare at the event, which has established itself as a vital scouting hub. Following last year’s attendance by the Sharks Academy, several festival participants have already transitioned into professional developmental ranks.

Mukuru Zimbabwe CEO Doug Tait-Knight said the sponsorship aligns closely with the company’s broader mission across the continent.

“At Mukuru, our mission is built on the resilience and ambition of the people we serve across the continent. We see that same spirit in these young athletes,” he said. “Returning as title sponsor during St John’s milestone 40th year is a proud moment for us. This festival is more than a sporting event; it’s a high-performance platform where the next generation of African talent is discovered.”

Beyond competition, organisers expect around 15 000 spectators over the week-long event, which compresses high-intensity derby-style fixtures into a single venue.

“We aren’t just sponsoring a tournament; we are investing in a community hub that mirrors our own commitment to excellence, unity, and the drive to cross new frontiers, whether on the pitch or in the world of financial inclusion,” added Tait-Knight.
