HAVING announced the discontinuation of its streaming service, Showmax last month, DStv has announced a significant transition for its streaming landscape, with Showmax subscribers set to receive a reprieve as the platform prepares to integrate its vast library of originals into a single, comprehensive home: DStv Stream.
The transition marks a pivotal shift for MultiChoice, aiming to provide a more holistic viewing experience by bridging the gap between on-demand local dramas and high-stakes live broadcasting.
In a communique, DStv said the primary objective of this consolidation is to ensure that viewers do not lose access to the stories they love. By migrating thousands of hours of Showmax Originals and an extensive on-demand library into DStv Stream, the broadcaster is creating a one-stop shop for entertainment.
Subscribers moving to DStv Stream Compact will gain access to a significantly broader content slate, including Live Sports Comprehensive coverage of live sports via SuperSport, a deeper catalogue of global series and movies, dedicated programming for kids, advanced features, and functional tools such as Watch From Start, offline downloads, and sophisticated data management settings.
To ease the transition, eligible Showmax subscribers, including those on the Premier League plan, will receive trial access to DStv Stream Compact at no initial cost. This trial period is scheduled to run until the end of May.
Following the conclusion of the trial, qualifying customers will be eligible for a heavily discounted rate for the subsequent 12 months, provided their subscriptions remain active and payments are up to date.
This offer represents a substantial saving compared to the standard market pricing for the DStv Stream Compact package.
For existing DStv Compact, Compact Plus, and Premium customers, the news is equally positive: they will continue to benefit from Showmax content integrated into their DStv Stream experience at no additional cost.
For those who choose not to make the move, MultiChoice has confirmed that autopayments to Showmax will cease automatically once the service is discontinued, and customers may request refunds for any remaining unused subscription credit. – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
