There is need to ensure that multilateral institutions are effective, fit for purpose, and responsive to the growing insecurity across the world, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Ambassador Frederick Shava has said.
In his remarks at a United Nations (UN) stakeholder meeting held in Harare in preparation for the Summit of the Future to be held in New York later this month, Ambassador Shava said current global conflicts are stretching multilateral systems to its limit.
“This will require significant reform of the multilateral system, particularly the United Nations Security Council whose mandate is to ensure the maintenance of global peace and security,” he said.
“A reformed, democratic and representative Security Council is our only chance to address the multifaceted security challenges we are currently facing. Drivers of these challenges have grown to include climate change, poverty, economic crises, and natural disasters.”
