A Mutare woman ran over her two-year-old son on Friday while reversing her car, resulting in his death a day later.

Police confirmed the incident that happened in Morningside.

“Reign Chinotsa died after he was run over by an Isuzu KB250 truck that was being driven by his mother, Regina Sengwe. She was reversing the car in their yard.

“A domestic worker, Charity Mtisi, left the boy on the ground as she went to open the gate. Reign was hit by the rear bumper of the truck and sustained head and chest injuries. He was rushed to Murambi Garden Clinic where he died the following day,” said Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luxson Chananda.

He said Sengwe did not report the matter to the police when the incident happened, but went on to do so after the boy’s death.

Insp Chananda said: “We urge motorists to exercise extreme caution and follow road rules like checking view and rear mirrors when reversing. This could have been avoided.”
