POLICE in Bulawayo have arrested a 36-year-old man, Godwell Mumba, on allegations of raping a 14-year-old girl in a shocking twist to a child abduction case that unfolded in the city on Tuesday.
The alleged offence came to light after the teenage girl was arrested for allegedly abducting a two-year-old toddler at Meikles Mall.
Sources close to the investigations said the minor made the disclosure during questioning by detectives following her arrest in connection with the toddler’s kidnapping.
The two-year-old was reportedly taken from the mall premises under unclear circumstances, triggering alarm before being safely recovered, 48 hours later
Following the minor’s revelations, police launched investigations that culminated in Mumba’s arrest.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the alleged sexual offence, but investigations into both matters are ongoing.
“I can confirm the arrest of Godwell Mumba. He is being charged with having sexual intercourse with a young person in contravention of section 70 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act,” said Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele.
Sources said Mumba is a popular Kombi driver plying the City-Sauerstown route.
