Munetsi over the moon with first goal

MARSHALL Munetsi was delighted to open his Wolves account under the Molineux lights as his first goal in gold and black helped secure a draw against Everton in the English Premiership football on Saturday.

The midfielder became the first Zimbabwean since Benjani in January 2011 to score in an English Premier League game, helping to secure what could be a crucial point for the Old Gold in their battle against the drop.

But Munetsi was left with mixed emotions after not being able to help the team fight for the win after being withdrawn at half-time after feeling a slight knock, however, he insisted he will be fit to feature in another crucial battle against Southampton next weekend.

On settling for a draw against Everton, Munetsi said:

“I think it’s something that we’re pushing for. Obviously, we wanted the win today, but Everton has been a team that has been in form, but we really pushed until the last minute.

“Obviously, we couldn’t get the three points, but it’s not over yet. We have to go again against Southampton before the International break, so I think we just have to keep on pushing and working.”

On fighting back to get level, he said:

“I think the coach demands us to play under pressure. Obviously, we don’t want to concede early and wanted to be the ones to score first, but the coach demands a lot from us, and he has been pushing us to try and overcome all the difficulties.

“But I think we reacted well and scored before the half time.”

On opening his account for Wolves, the Zimbabwe international said it felt good.

“It feels good. It’s been coming and I think in the last couple of games I had chances to score, but obviously in football you can never predict when you’re going to score.

“But I think the coach and the players have always had that faith in me to keep on pushing and scoring. Benjani was a pivotal player for us in Zimbabwe and, historically, he paved the way for us Zimbabweans.”

On being a versatile member of the squad, Munetsi said:

“We have a lot of quality in the team and if the coach asks me to play in a certain role with the tactics that we had, if we want to press from the front — this is something that he was asked for us — to put more pressure on the defence I’m able to do that.

“It’s something that we always try to work on and playing as a striker, playing on the wing, or playing as a midfielder, for me, it’s not a problem, as long as I’m able to help the team.” — wolves.co.uk/Sports Reporter.
