adminMarange admitted to six counts of theft when she appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Kudakwashe Jarabini.
Mr Jarabini treated all the counts as one and slapped Marange to a 15-months jail term. She had five months of her sentence suspended on condition of good behaviour.
The remaining 10 months were set aside on condition she restitutes Chitungwiza Municipality of US$6 210 by 30 June.
In sentencing her, Mr Jarabini took into account that cases of dishonest are now rife and there was a need for courts to impose deterrent sentences. The municipality was represented by Godwin Mvere who is employed as the acting chief security officer.
Agreed facts were that on 31 December last year and at Seke South Clinic, Marange received US$990 as maternity fees and receipted it. Marange also pocketed money she was supposed to deposit into the municipality’s account. On 7 January, Chipo Mudzindi, her workmate, receipted 38 receipts amounting to US$1 140 and put the money in the safe.
The following morning, Marange stole the money lying that she wanted to take it to the bank.
Marange employed the same methods and stole various amounts. She was arrested after council carried out an internal audit.
