HARARE businessman Gilbert Muponda has withdrawn from the race for the ZIFA presidency just 24 hours before the close of the nomination process.
Muponda, who had launched a vigorous campaign on social media for the past month, said he was now throwing his weight behind rival contestant, Nqobile Magwizi.
“After wide consultation I have decided to withdraw from the ZIFA president elections. I fully endorse Nqobile Magwizi as the most qualified and deserving candidate who can revive our game.
“Nqobile Magwizi is qualified, experienced and has a clean proven record of mobilising resources for the game. He is the most deserving candidate who possess the necessary skills and expertise required to transform Zimbabwean football,” said Muponda in a Facebook post.
The ZIFA executive committee elections will be held on January 25.
Those who have since filed their papers include Premier Soccer League chairperson Farai Jere, Northern Region Soccer League chairperson Martin Kweza, former ZIFA board member (finance) Philemon Machana, Harare businessman Nqobile Magwizi, former member of parliament Temba Mliswa, football executive Marshal Gore and ex-PSL chairman Twine Phiri.
