A 36-YEAR-OLD self proclaimed prophet recently appeared before Murambinda Magistrates’ Court facing 11 counts of theft and fraud.
He was remanded in custody after the State opposed bail, saying he was a flight risk.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa, confirmed the arrest of Christopher Mudawarima, better known as Prophet Muda of The Glory of Hope Pentecostal Church three weeks ago.
Muda was on the run for the past five months.
Insp Kakohwa urged members of the public to be careful when dealing with anybody who claims to be the God’s servant to avoid similar incidents.
He said Muda fled from Murambinda to Zvishavane where he had started another church between November and December 2015 after lying and stealing $8 500 meant for his followers’ residential stands, among other goods. He is also reported to have duped other people from the area.
“His intelligence and power of healing saw a large number people in Murambinda dumping their usual churches to his Glory of Hope Pentecostal Church in 2014. Muda ended up duping his followers and other people.
“People believed in him as the man of God as he collected money, promising to organise jobs, residential stands, nursing and college vacancies anywhere in Zimbabwe. He further duped people into believing that he would import cars from South Africa on their behalf, duty free.
“After waiting in vain, his victims made a police report and a manhunt for Mudaas launched,” said Insp Kakohwa.
Muda was arrested in Zvishavane and was brought to Murambinda Police Station before being sent to court.
Insp Kakohwa added that police in Nyanga, Rusape and Kadoma were also keen to interview Muda in connection with fraud cases reported against him in those areas.
