PETER DUBE, the man accused of murdering two people and attempting to kill two others in Gweru in 2021, will stand trial at the High Court next month.
Dube, who spent nearly three years on the run using false identities, was formally indicted on Tuesday last week and will appear before the Gweru High Court on September 9.
He faces two counts of murder and two others of attempted murder.
The State alleges that Dube shot and killed Shelton Chiduku and Gamuchirai Mudungwe following a dispute over his wife’s alleged infidelity.
He is also accused of shooting and injuring his wife, Nyasha Nharingo, and her sister, Nyaradzo.
After the shootings, Dube fled the country, evading the authorities by assuming different identities in South Africa, Eswatini and Ireland.
He was eventually arrested in Ireland before being deported to Mozambique, where he was extradited back to Zimbabwe later last year.
The trial is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the killings and Dube’s subsequent evasion of justice.
The State, led by Ms Hellen Khoza, is alleging that on April 22, 2021, around 11am, the late Chiduku and Mudungwe accompanied Nyasha and Nyaradzo to Masvingo to collect Nyasha’s
passport.
Dube, who had just married Nyasha as a second wife, learnt that the four had travelled together without his knowledge.
This, according to the State, did not go down well with him.
At around 8pm on the same day, Dube allegedly armed himself with a Zastara pistol and went to Bensam Flats along Main Street in Gweru, where Nyasha was residing.
He then confronted Nyasha, quizzing her over Chiduku’s presence at her apartment.
An altercation between the two ensued, prompting Dube to go outside, before allegedly shooting Chiduku, who was seated in a Toyota Hiace.
Chiduku died instantly.
Further allegations are that Dube turned the gun on Mudungwe, who was with Chiduku, as she tried to escape and shot her once on the left cheek.
She collapsed and died instantly.
The State also alleges that Dube then went back into Nyasha’s apartment, where he pumped a bullet into her right cheek.
After shooting Nyasha, Dube is alleged to have turned his wrath on Nyaradzo, whom he shot above the left ear.
Nyasha and Nyaradzo were later taken to the Gweru Provincial Hospital, where they underwent medical operations before being discharged.
Dube is alleged to have then fled to South Africa, before relocating to Eswatini, where he changed his identity to Xolile Mtsali in October 2021.
Using the false identity, he then relocated to Ireland, where he applied for asylum.
Dube was then arrested last year in Dublin after the publication of an expose by The Sunday Mail and was charged and later convicted of violating the country’s immigration laws.
Upon his conviction, Dube refused to be deported to Zimbabwe, claiming he was a Mozambican citizen named Armando Quenete Muchanga.
The authorities in Ireland then deported him to Mozambique, where it was further also established that he was a Zimbabwean citizen.
He was then deported to Zimbabwe.
