SPECIAL Olympian Munyaradzi Musariri claimed his third National Special Olympics Championship in an 18-hole golf tournament at Chapman yesterday.
The tournament saw more than 30 special Olympic golfers drawn from schools and institutions around the country taking part.
The intellectually-challenged athletes competed in the skills, nine-hole and 18-hole categories.
As the tradition of the tournament, it was hosted in the spirit of Special Olympics movement.
The competition is not meant to find winners but to enhance athletes’ self-esteem through sport and also revive sports programmes for athletes with intellectual disabilities in Zimbabwe.
National Sales and Marketing Manager of Toyota Zimbabwe Carl Varga was the guest of honour at the event.
Varga praised the organisers and promised that Toyota Zimbabwe will continue supporting Special Olympics.
“Well done to the board of the Special Olympics, we are very happy to be part of this initiative and will keep supporting it,” said Varga.
“This board is very organised and if there is any board out there that is in search of assistance then they should be as professional as this board (Special Olympics Zimbabwe Board).”
The Special Olympics Zimbabwe national finals come barely a month after the country made their inaugural World Championships appearance that saw three athletes — Viren Metha, John Donking and Munyaradzi Musariri — travelling to Japan to participate in Level One, Two and Level Five golf championships.
Chairperson of the Special Olympics Zimbabwe board Viola Musariri hailed the athletes, officials and sponsors for their support.
“We are grateful for the support we have been receiving from our sponsors, families and even athletes.
“The journey to LA has already begun and we are calling for everyone to join forces to make it happen,” Musariri said.
