Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Christopher Mushohwe yesterday joined the Mandizha family in mourning former Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation assistant director-general — administration and personnel, Mr Dominic Joseph Mandizha.

Mr Mandizha died on Saturday. He was 80. Speaking at the funeral wake for Mr Mandizha at his home in Alexandra Park, Harare, Dr Mushohwe described the veteran broadcaster as a fountain of wisdom.

“He was one of the people who established this establishment that we call ZBC today,” he said.

“The juniors here, they know the legacy he set since independence.

“For the country to be known beyond our borders and for the local people to know what is happening across Zimbabwe, it is because of the ZBC. Mr Mandizha played a very important role in developing the station.”

First Lady Amai Mugabe’s sister, Mrs Junior Gumbochuma, who was accompanied by Mrs Bona Mugabe-Chikore and her sister-in-law Mrs Marufu, also visited the family to pay their condolences.

“We join the family in mourning, but at the same time, when we look at his age, we also celebrate a life well lived,” said Mrs Gumbochuma.

“God blessed him with many years — 80 years of age is not a joke.

“Some people are dying at 25 or 30, but God blessed him with abundant life he lived till now.”

Mr Mandizha was born on April 14, 1937 in the then Salisbury.

He did his secondary education at St. Francis Xavier’s College Kutama from 1950 to 1954.

He joined the then Southern Rhodesian Broadcasting Corporation on January 1, 1964 as a programme producer.

Mr Mandizha also held various positions including Senior Programme Producer, Assistant Director, Director (African Services) and Director (Administration and Personnel).

On March 9, 1990, Mr Mandizha was appointed Assistant Director General — Administration and Personnel, a position he held until his retirement on June 30, 1992
