The national holiday was designated a few years ago so that Zimbabweans can remember the signing of the Unity Accord on the same date in 1987.
To commemorate the day, Zimbabweans also organise a music gala every year in December.
This year, the gala coincides with Zanu-PF’s 12th Annual National People’s Conference being held in Bulawayo.
Last year’s edition also coincided with the party conference that was held in Mutare.
The gala is designed to mark the signing of the Unity Accord in song and dance. President Mugabe of Zanu-PF and the late Dr Joshua Nkomo of PF-Zapu signed the Unity Accord on 22 December 1987.
The Unity Accord brought unity among all Zimbabweans, creating an enabling environment for them to work in peace for the development of the country.
The organisers of the music extravaganza have released the line up of the musicians who are going to perform at the Unity Gala.
This event is going to be held at White City Stadium from Saturday evening till Sunday.
Fans would have an opportunity to see surprises, as there would be some up-and-coming artistes who have never performed at such an event.
Some of the up-and-coming artistes who have been included in this year’s entertaining line up include Mbare Chimurenga Choir, ZCC Mbungo, 1st Street Band and Tryson Chimbetu.
Old-timers to headline the event include Sandra Ndebele, Mahendere Brothers, Cde Chinx, Kireni Zulu, Alick Macheso, Chase Skuza and Amai na Baba Charamba, Mokis Connection, Leonard Zhakata, Kapfupi, Nicholas Zakaria, Chase Skuza, Gift Amuli and Progress Chipfumo.
The organisers of this year’s event are treating the gala as an early Christmas present to all music lovers around the country as they would have an opportunity to see Zimbabwean talent for free.
Unity Gala commemorations last year were held in Mutare and many of the country’s top groups performed and these included the late Tongai Moyo, Sandra Ndebele, Iyasa, Stunner, Kapfupi and the Born Free Crew.
Organisers of the gala and some musicians have promised fireworks.
The show would be held on the night when the Zanu-PF conference ends, so delegates to the annual convention are expected to troop into the stadium from the venue of their meeting, the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair Grounds.
