‘Music, sports careers pay handsomely’

Government has urged parents and teachers to identify and support children in developing their talents in different disciplines since not all children are academically gifted. Speaking at a speech and prize-giving ceremony at Mukumba Primary School in Chihota last week, Minister of State for Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs Retired Brigadier-General Ambrose Mutinhiri said these talents could help children to be self-reliant in the future.

“Let us support our children to pursue their talents in disciplines like sport and music because they might earn a living from those talents in the future. Some prominent people have made it in life and are earning millions of dollars through sports. We also have a lot of people who have made it in life by pursuing their music careers. Look at our local musicians like Oliver Mtukudzi, Jah Prayzah and Thomas Mapfumo, they have made their names and earn a living through music. So parents and teachers, let’s motivate our children so that they can follow their dreams and become great people in the future,” said Rtd Brig-Gen Mu- tinhiri. The minister also applauded the Government for implementing the updated new curriculum since it is encouraging pupils to pursue their talents.

“The Government envisages to see children exploiting the best of their talents in different disciplines. Not all children are academically gifted, hence the introduction of subjects like visual and performing arts, mass display, physical education, agriculture and computer science just to mention a few. These subjects will allow learners to be self-reliant and be productive in their future lives,” he said.
