A musical camp for children and music lovers willing to learn the ropes in this arts genre will be held in Marondera next week.

Now in its third-year running, the camp dubbed “Music That Matters Camp” is slated for August 13 to 19 at Peter House Girls School in Marondera.

Music That Matters camp is an initiative by Let the Children Play Zimbabwe aimed at using music as one of the driving tool for social change.

“This camp is programmed in a way that the campers will be more informed on what the music industry is all about,” said Ms Theresa Muteta camp director.

“It looks at issues like discipline focusing on individual needs, for them to be a good musician, how their music can be turned into business, song writing, performance tips and so forth.

“The week-long camp is targeted at children between eight and 18 years. We are delighted to be having Tariro neGitare as our resident camp facilitator this year.”

“Tariro is a talented performer, singer and songwriter whom has been touring and collaborating home and away.

Muteta also encouraged those with personal instrument to bring it along.

“We look at different genres of music that will broaden their musicality and skill. I think what people need to know is that there is actually a platform for young musicians”

The concept was brought about by a children’s band programme called ‘Plugged In’ based in the US that they have been working with.

“We plan to have our two camps merge so that we can have international exchange camps in the future and we have been camping at a school with great facilities atmosphere and surroundings that we believe also provides a refreshing experience out of the ‘concrete jungle’,” she said.

Since the beginning of camp we have had as facilitators and guests jam signal, Tendex, Tinashe Makura, Cultures in Harmony (US), Afrofit, Clive Madlala (SA) and this year we are excited to be having Tariro neGitare.

Camp brings young musicians together to inspire each other and be creative.
