FAST-RISING Afro-Jazz musician BS Brown has shown that his heart is as rich as his music by donating 1 000 exercise books to orphaned primary school children in Plumtree, his hometown.

The charitable gesture, carried out through his foundation, YES Trust Zimbabwe, was made possible through collaboration with key partners, including the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare. The two ministries will work together to compile a database of orphaned learners from both Plumtree town and its surrounding rural areas to ensure the fair distribution of the stationery.

Speaking on the initiative, BS Brown — best known for his hit song Ukuthanda Umuntu — shared that the inspiration stemmed from his own experiences.

“I was moved by the different conditions I saw orphans going through during my school days. I always dreamt of helping other kids facing similar obstacles, and I can say this initiative is a dream come true,” he said.
BS Brown highlighted the importance of education.

“Education is the key that unlocks the door to opportunities, and it’s the foundation upon which we can build a brighter future. These books represent a small but significant step towards bridging the educational gap that exists for many orphaned learners.”

The singer emphasised this donation marks just the beginning of a broader journey aimed at building a more equitable and just society. He urged fellow artistes and community members to also embrace the spirit of giving back.

“I hope this gesture inspires other creatives and leaders in the community to also help where they can. Help can go beyond orphans to other vulnerable groups in our society,” said BS Brown.

He also extended heartfelt gratitude to the stakeholders who partnered in the initiative, noting that their support made it possible to expand the reach and impact of the programme.

To the children who will receive the books, BS Brown offered words of encouragement.

“You are not alone. You are valued, worthy, and capable of achieving great things in life. As you use these books, may you find inspiration, comfort, and joy. May you discover new worlds, new ideas, and new possibilities.”
