Muslim Brotherhood-led coalition wins 40 percent votes in first round polls

among party candidates in the preliminary results of the first stage of the People’s Assembly polls, official Al-Ahram newspaper reported yesterday.
The Islamic Alliance led by the Salafist Al-Nour Party won 25 percent, the secular Egyptian Bloc 15 percent, the Al-Wafd Party 11 percent and the Islamist Wasat Party six percent, said the newspaper.
The current votes cannot show how many seats these blocs could grab, as the final results for the party lists will only be announced at the end of the whole elections in mid-January.
In the first-stage vote on 28 November and 29 November, only four independents secured their seats. The remaining 52 seats for independent candidates will be contested among 104 candidates in the run-off vote today and tomorrow in the nine governorates including Cairo and Alexandria.
The turnout in the first-stage parliamentary polls reached 62 percent, said Abdel-Moez Ibrahim, chairman of the High Judicial Elections Commission, on Friday. He dubbed the turnout as the highest in the era of Egypt’s elections. – Xinhua.
