FC Platinum striker Walter Musona admits that he carries a huge burden on his shoulders to follow the footsteps of his brother Knowledge. Walter has turned himself into one of the key players at FC Platinum after coach Norman Mapeza gave him the freedom to express himself by scoring some crucial goals.
The Zimbabwe youth international is expected to lead the FC Platinum attack when they plunge into the Chibuku Super Cup final against Harare City at Mandava on Sunday.
Musona concedes that he will be under the spotlight and told The Herald that he carries the weight of expectations to do as well as his brother, who is now based in Germany.
Knowledge Musona is widely regarded as the finest football player to emerge in the country in the past five years.
However, he has struggled to make an impression at his Bundesliga side, TSG Hoffenheim, but has vowed to continue his battle to make a mark in Europe.
Reports have linked Knowledge with a return to Kaizer Chiefs in January, but the Warriors talisman has been telling his handlers that he wants to remain in Europe, instead, and compete for his place in one of the teams there.
Walter said his brother’s success in South Africa, and for the national team, has also heaped pressure on him to do very well.
“I get a lot of it (pressure) in the games and even during training,” said Walter.
“My brother Knowledge has done well in his football career and, therefore, people expect me to do well.
“I love football and I strive and do my best and to always perform well.
“It is not easy to be a striker but my brother is my inspiration, I have to do well and try to be like him.
“The football fans also exert pressure because the majority of them want to see a talented Musona and not a lazy player.
“This Sunday we are playing in the Chibuku Super Cup final and I am hoping to do well, if I get an opportunity to score, it will be good for the team, fans and the Musona family, especially my brother.”
Walter heaped praise on his coach, Mapeza, who has given him a lot of opportunities to prove himself.
The young forward scored the priceless goal, in the semi-finals, that helped FC Platinum beat Black Rhinos 1-0 at Rufaro.
“With the type of training we are getting from coach Norman Mapeza, we have better chances of winning,” said Walter. “We have been training hard and we are grateful to the coach and, hopefully, we will win, though we are expecting a tough game against Harare City.”
