Mutandiro wins in Beitbridge

CRACK long distance runner Gilbert Mutandiro won the inaugural Beitbridge Mayor’s 21km Half Marathon held between Lutumba Business Centre and Beitbridge on Saturday morning. Mutandiro beat 64 others as he romped home to victory in 1 hour 8 minutes and 13 seconds, two minutes slower than his previous record during a similar half marathon involving Zimbabwean and South African athletes.The race, organised by the Beitbridge Town Council, was held under the theme “Running Against Litter” and was supported by the Environmental Management Authority, among a host of other partners.

The main objective of the race was to raise awareness among Beitbridge residents on issues of managing solid waste.

Lanky athlete, Morris Muleya, was second after clocking 1 hour 20 minutes while Eugene Kelvin Mkwanazi finished third.

The 21 km race started at Lutumba Business Centre and ended at Border Service Station in Beitbridge.

The winner received $100, the runner-up $75 and the third-placed athlete took home $50.

The 10km mens’ race was won by Cassious Moyo with Humbulani Moyo and Washington Chaminuka coming in second and third places.

Brilliant Mbengwa, Choseman Moyo, Cliff Singo took the top three places in the junior male 10km road race category.

Businessman Nkululeko Mbedzi and Nyasha Makambe are some of the veterans who finished in the top five in the 10km race. Beitbridge Town Secretary, Loud Ramakgapolo, Exile Mbedzi, Oscor Chiromo, Patrick Terarai, Onias Chiwanja and Tennson Moyo are some of the big personalities in this town who took part in the main race.

Renowned businesswomen, Patricia Ndlovu, Regina Ndlovu and Numphumelelo Chigwinya also took part in the female 10km race.
