MUTARE City Council has strengthened its waste management capacity with the addition of two brand-new refuse compactors, a move expected to enhance refuse collection and improve cleanliness across the city.
The newly acquired compactors, each with a carrying capacity of 19 tonnes, are the largest in the local authority’s fleet. Their acquisition increases the city’s refuse collection fleet to 16 compactors and two skip trucks.
Mutare City Council spokesperson, Mr Charles Sadondo, said the investment reflects the local authority’s commitment to improving service delivery and maintaining a clean urban environment.
“The new equipment will improve the council’s ability to collect refuse more efficiently while contributing to a cleaner and healthier city,” he said.
Mr Sadondo said the compactors will significantly strengthen the city’s waste collection operations by increasing carrying capacity and reducing collection turnaround times.
“The new compactors will enhance our refuse collection capacity, improve operational efficiency and help make Mutare cleaner, healthier and more attractive,” he said.
He added that the additional equipment will support council efforts to provide better municipal services to residents, businesses and visitors amid growing demand for effective waste management.
Mr Sadondo urged residents to work hand-in-hand with the local authority by adopting responsible waste disposal habits and making proper use of designated collection points.
“A cleaner Mutare is possible if we all play our part. Residents should dispose of waste responsibly and help keep our communities clean,” he said.
The local authority also warned against illegal dumping of refuse in undesignated areas within the city centre and residential suburbs, saying community cooperation remains key to maintaining a clean, healthy and attractive environment.
The acquisition of the new compactors comes as council continues implementing measures aimed at improving service delivery and ensuring efficient waste collection throughout the city.
