Mayor speaks on city farming in undesignated areas
City of Mutare Mayor Councillor Simon Chabuka goes straight into the agenda of the Full Council meeting with the first matter to be discussed being the destruction of maize crops around the city owing to environmental degradation that comes with farming activities on undesignated areas.
The local authority has been moving around the city slashing crops planted on undesignated areas.
Mutare City Council has designated specific portions of land for urban agriculture and urged residents to apply for permits before the onset of the current farming season.
The local authority stressed that although urban agriculture is important, it must not be done in a haphazard manner with residents following the guidelines to avoid farming in restricted areas
Councillor Chabuka says the rate at which the city is suffering from the effects of land degradation caused by poor urban farming methods is regrettable.
He reveals that he visited the area in Sakubva where maize crops were slashed by the local authority employees in a video clip that went viral on social media and admits that the incident has dented Mutare City Council’s image.
The local authority, he adds, finds itself between a rock and a hard place in efforts to balance preserving the environment while allowing people find extra source of food

Two councilors raise issues relating to procedures in recruitment of employees as well as related packages, but the Mayor, Councillor Chabuka, says the issues were supposed to be discussed in the respective committee since it involves employee confidentiality

Mutare City committed to fighting drug abuse
On the fight against drugs and substance abuse, the Councillor Chabuka suggests that the local authority collaborates with other stakeholders and partners to intensify their efforts to help Central Government curb the scourge.
Many communities in the city are ravaged by the rampant peddling and use of drugs and dangerous substances.
The local authority says it is prepared to partner law enforcement agents in rooting out the drug dens and culprits

Local authority contributes towards Uhuru celebrations
The local authority announces is has budgeted US$1 000 to give towards the 2025 provincial Independence celebrations to be held in Manicaland.
