MUTARE City were handed their second defeat of the season by impressive Prime Rangers in a Zifa Eastern Division One league match at Ruwa Stadium on Saturday.
The surprise result saw the Mutare-based team slumping to fifth position on the log while another league debutant, Masvingo City posted a 0-1 victory away at Masvingo Poly to remain on second position in what promises to be an interesting season for them.
Masvingo United who had shown signs of rejuvenation when they posted two victories on the trot, went down by a single goal to FC Three Leaves away in Chipinge and they dropped to position 11 from 10 with six points from five games while the later took over position 10 with seven points from the same number of games played.
“Una Una” who started as whipping boys of the league this season given their first two loses were of late enjoying a purple patch as they dispatched former PSL side Chiredzi FC 5-0 before registering their first away victory against Gaza Gunners in Chipinge the following week. However, their loss could not dampen the spirit of their chairperson, Phillip Shumba who has vowed that the team will fight for promotion this season.
He said despite the challenges, most of them related to finances, the team was ready to soldier on until Premiership football is brought back to the ancient town.
Other teams in the top five on the log include Mwenazana and Tenax with 10 and nine points respectively. However, Tenax and Mutare City have the same number of points but separated by goal difference.
