AFTER a successful launch of Culture Week in Bulawayo yesterday, the celebrations are now spreading to Matabeleland South province with another launch scheduled for Madabe area in Mangwe District on Friday.
The celebrations will once again be held under the theme “Celebrating Arts and Cultural Entrepreneurship”.
Matabeleland South provincial arts manager, Nokuthula Moyo said preparations for the launch were at an advanced stage.
“We’re in the final stages of constructing a culture centre at the venue and we hope everything will be complete by Friday. As a province we’ve decided that every venue for our celebrations should’ve a culture centre in order to bring out the emphasis of culture,” said Moyo.
He said the guest of honour at the celebrations would be Chief Nqobile Mabhena of Umzingwane District with Minister of State for Provincial Affairs in Matabeleland South, Abednico Ncube expected to grace the occasion.
Various traditional groups and poets will provide entertainment with displays of crafts and traditional foods being exhibited. Among entertainers will be Jaunda Community Arts, Bulawayo-based poet Nqindi, renowned Plumtree traditional dance groups — Matjinge and Tokwana and drama group — Yebo Yes.
Chief Wasi who is hosting the commemorations said the celebrations would put the Kalanga culture on the map.
“It’s a great honour to be hosting this year’s commemorations because this will give us an opportunity to showcase, not only various cultures found in the province, but the Kalanga tradition and cultural practices as well,” Chief Wasi said.
He urged youths to be active in the commemorations as they were the future generation responsible for safe guarding cultural practices.
