Traders in Mutare have commended the decentralisation of national events, as the city witnesses an uptick in business activity ahead of the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo, which kicks off tomorrow.

For the first time, the expo is being held outside Bulawayo, marking another milestone in the Government’s efforts to promote inclusive economic and social development, national cohesion, and unity.

Mutare has been a hive of activity since Monday night, with traditional restaurants, butcheries, and other food outlets experiencing a surge in customers.

Chef Paul Karumbidza, who operates a city-centre restaurant, said he was forced to close late due to the high volume of visitors.

“We would like to commend the Government for bringing this year’s expo to Mutare because it’s also boosting our business as we sell food to visitors, and the numbers are increasing daily,” he said.

The economic benefits are being felt across various sectors, including those in the fashion and desinger industry as well as the transport sector.

Ms Memory Chitiyo, a tailor in the central business district, said the influx of visitors has led to increased orders for national fabric dresses and T-shirts.

“We are happy because it’s brought us business,” she said. “If events like this were held yearly, it would put us on the map as a destination for national dress enthusiasts.”

Another local resident Nyatsvimbo Maxwell commended the decentralisation adding that the event has spurred infrastructure improvements.

“Mutare Sports Club had become a haven for thieves, but if you look at the current renovations, the place is now world-class, with good lighting and beautiful surroundings,” he said.

This news crew’s attempts to book rooms at local hotels were met with confirmation that most were fully booked, highlighting the high demand for accommodation in the city.

The latest development is in line with President Mnangagwa’s directive for decentralising key national events across various provinces and districts, especially those that were previously marginalised.

This policy, which is part of the broader National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), aims to address historical imbalances by spreading infrastructure projects and economic opportunities beyond major urban centres.
