A MUTARE Municipal Police officer is refusing to up the maintenance he is paying to his ex-wife saying she is squandering the money without taking care of his child. Batsirai Dirwa said his ex-wife, Winnet Nyamungonda, was squandering the little that he has been providing for his child. Dirwa was dragged to court by Nyamungonda who wants an upward variation of the maintenance figure from $40 to $200 for their 12-year-old child.
Mrs Venencia Mugota presided over the matter. Nyamungonda told the court her son was starting Form One next year at Sahumani Secondary School so she needed more money to cater for his school fees, uniforms and food.
“The child is now going to secondary school so the $40 that he has been paying is no longer sufficient. I need more money to buy school uniforms, food and pay for his fees,” said Nyamungonda. Dirwa dismissed her claims saying the $40 was enough.
He told the court that he is even failing to manage his needs with the $220 that he is earning from Mutare City Council. “I have a wife and four other children to take care of and I am even failing to manage with the $220 that I am getting per month. Moreover these women misuse the money that we give them as maintenance for our children,” said Dirwa.
He told Mrs Mugota that he was not going to pay anything more. In her ruling, Mrs Mugota ordered Dirwa to continue paying the $40 maintenance and pay $70 for the child’s school fees with effect from December 1.
