MUTARE Polytechnic rugby team scooped gold at the Tertiary Education Sports Association of Zimbabwe Games played at Kushinga Phikelela Technical College in Marondera last week.
The TESAZ Games, that ran from Monday to Friday, saw all the country’s tertiary institutions battle for top honours in indoor and outdoor sporting activities.
The winning team at the TESAZ booked a ticket to compete in the Zimbabwe Tertiary Institutions Sports Union Games to be held in July.
Mutare Poly rugby team last year wrote its own history in their debut year by winning the ZITISU Games and becoming the first Zimbabwean rugby team to represent the country at the Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association of Africa Zone V games held in Zambia last August.
At the TESAZ Games, Mutare Poly first played Harare Poly and trounced them 36-0; then took on Kwekwe Poly and beat them 34-0. In the semi-finals they faced Msasa Technical College and beat them 26-12 and booked a place in the finals.
The finals pitted them against Harare Poly again where they decisively crushed the Harare side 55-0 to win the tournament. Mutare Poly rugby coach Innocent Manjoro said he was impressed with his team.
“This evidently shows that we have the rugby talent in Mutare in our tertiary institutions. We started rugby last year at Mutare Poly and did extremely well, winning all the way to become the national champions,” he said.
