MUTARE is on the verge of launching a local rugby league that will comprise of tertiary institutions, uniformed forces and community teams, The Weekender has learnt.
The envisaged Mutare Rugby League is expected to play a crucial role in scouting talent to strengthen Mutare’s sole Northern Region League outfit Mutare Sports Club.
Mutare Sports Club coach Mackenzie Munetsi confirmed that efforts are underway for the formation of Mutare Rugby League.
He expressed hope that they will get the necessary support from local tertiary colleges as well as uniformed forces in the province.
“We are in the process of forming Mutare Rugby League. We came up with this idea as a way to create a feeder for Mutare Sports Club. We are intending to rope in local tertiary colleges as well as uniformed forces.
“We have the Prisons, the army as well as police who could come up with own respective clubs to partake in the local league. We also have a good number of tertiary institutions that we also hope can come up with their teams.
“We are also going to have Mutare Sports Club B side that will also take part in the league. All things being equal we should get not less than seven teams.
“We are quite aware that we have talent here in Mutare and what is only lacking is the platform to showcase that talent. That is exactly what we are aiming at addressing so that we build a strong Mutare Sports Club that will be a force to reckon with in the Northern Region League,” he said.
Mutare has never known a local league in rugby since the days of the Country Districts when outlying farmers, predominantly white, from Marondera to Mutare used to compete in a national league.
Later Mutare Sports Club also participated in a national league before the advent of the current Southern and Northern rugby leagues.
