MUTARE Golf Eve Academy grounds in Westlea will be a hive of activity when different clubs descend on its lush green turf for the season opening gala early next month.
A number of clubs, with some college and high school-based teams, have joined the bandwagon of participants competing in different competitions in the fast growing sporting discipline of korfball.
Korfball is a ball sport with similarities to netball, basketball, and ringball.
The objective is to throw a ball into a netless basket that is mounted on a 3,5m pole.
Each team is composed of four female players and four male players.
IKF Africa Development education executive assistant, Melody Mutasa said preparations for the season opening gala are progressing well with numerous prospective participants expressing interest to be part of the event.
“We are really excited with the response we are getting from community based teams as well as college and high school teams that are willing to be part of the korfball family of teams.
“As far as the season opening gala is concerned, we are moving ahead with the preparations, and the event is slated for February 6. The event will be held at Golf Eve Academy grounds in Westlea, opposite Baring Primary School,” said Mutasa.
Teams such as Tongogara Refugee Camp, Holy Ghost College, Arda Transau, Chirasika Shining Stars Club, Masvaure High, Mutare Girls’ High, Mutare Boys’ High, Chitora High School, St Joseph’s High, Chikanga High, Chikanga Primary, Baring Primary, Pafiwa Mutasa High, Eastern Villa Chimanimani, The Mighters, and Hobhouse Club are expected to compete during the event.
Mutare Polytechnic, Mutare Teachers’, ZOU Mutare, ZOU Marondera, ZOU Bulawayo and Golden Age, a team from the public service, are also expected to be part of the event.
The game of korfball is fast gaining traction in the country, and Manicaland in particular, after a hugely successful competition that drew participants from three provinces, held at Mutare Girls’ High School late last year.
Participants from Harare, Mashonaland East and host province, Manicaland competed in various age group competitions, with the Under-20 category witnessing Dzivarasekwa 1 scooping the gold medal, while Mufakose 1 snatched the silver medal.
St Joseph’s High of Mutare settled for the bronze medal.
