THE Scott Sakupwanya Foundation hosted a football tournament in Mabvuku to promote grassroots development and spread the fight against drug abuse.
All secondary schools in Mabvuku, Herentals College, Mabvuku 1 High, Tafara High 1 and Tafara High 2, took part in the tournament, which involved Under-15, Under-17 and Under-20s boys.
Scott Sakupwanya Foundation chairperson, Pritchard Sibanda, said the tournament will be held annually, as it is their wish to teach students about the dangers of drugs.
“We want to promote grassroots football, through hosting this event.
“This will be an annual event, and not only soccer, but other sporting disciplines, which include netball and cricket, among others.
“We will continue supporting them to realise their dreams, as we would want to see them representing the country one day.
“It’s also our desire that they stay away from drugs,” he said.
Former Dynamos and current Green Fuel coach, Lloyd Mutasa, was the guest of honour at the tournament.
Mutasa said he had spotted some talented youngsters in the tourney.
“I want to thank and really appreciate people like Mr Scott for what they are doing for the game.
“It reminds me of yesteryear times.
“We used to see people starting from the grassroots going on to do well in the Premier Soccer League.
“It’s good that the youngsters are already competing at grassroots football and are already winning medals.
“These things motivate them to want to achieve more. “It will inspire them to want to play in the PSL,” said Mutasa.
He said he was impressed by the talent he saw and would be recommending that some players to join the Green Fuel juniors’ system.
