Mutasa Rural District Council has resolved to venture into banana farming to boost revenue generation.
The project is earmarked for Zindi area.
A few years ago council embarked on a similar project but it folded owing to lack of expertise.
Mutasa RDC chief executive officer Mr George Bandure confirmed the development in an interview with The Herald recently.
He said this was in line with a directive from Government encouraging councils to start income generating projects in areas under their jurisdiction.
“Local authorities are being urged by the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing to embark on income generating projects leveraging on various natural endowments in their areas,” said Mr Bandure.
“We were advised to think outside the box in terms of interrogating new revenue streams with the fast changing macro-economic environment.
‘‘Our rural district council is looking at resuscitating Chiteme banana field in Zindi,” he added.
Mr Bandure said lack of expertise handicapped previous such efforts.
“We have noticed that bananas are on high demand and we are going ahead with this project.
‘‘However, recently we had an agricultural expert who indicated that we need to plant more banana varieties to avoid infections,” said Mr Bandure.
