WHAWHA technical director, Lloyd Mutasa has said he would rope in more defenders to add steel to the team’s rear guard ahead of the new Castle Lager Premiership season. This comes after the newly promoted Premiership side was walloped 3-0 by Bulawayo Chiefs at Ascot Stadium in their first pre-season encounter.
Bulawayo Chiefs got all their goals in the first half as the Whawha defence seemed not to have a clue as to how to deal with the alert visitors’ strikers.
Despite the defeat Samaita as Mutasa is affectionately known in football circles, said he has enough arsenal to compete in the Premiership.
“It was a good preparatory match for us which gave us a chance to assess our players. Bulawayo Chiefs are a good side in terms of fitness and were far ahead of us and this is one area we have to work on.
“Defensively we came short and conceded three goals in the first half and we never recovered. We therefore need to fortify our defence by adding two or three defenders in the team otherwise we have good players who can hold their own in the Premiership,” he said.
Meanwhile, the prisons and correctional services side started training at Wilson Fields in Gweru in a move meant to take the club to the community.
“Like we’ve said before Whawha belongs to the Gweru community and it’s time that the people of Gweru come and see their team training. As from today we’ll now be training at Wilson Fields as a way of taking the team to the community which supported us.
“With the community on our side we’re confident that we’ll be in the Premiership to stay,” said Ruzvidzo Muchongwe who is the Whawha vice-chairperson.
“Chekera Pasi” as Whawha is affectionately known has been training at the prisons grounds the same venue which they used when they were playing in the Zifa Central Soccer League last year.
