LILONGWE. — Malawi President Peter Mutharika has fired his Press secretary, Fredrick Ndala, over alleged misappropriation of cash meant for journalists during a meeting Mutharika had with the scribes in November.

Local media said Ndala was implicated in the scheme where over 100 journalists who attended the presidential interface at the state residence in Malawi’s commercial city of Blantyre were given a quarter of what they were meant to get as travelling and sundries allowances.

The scam came to light when some quarters within the media questioned the rationale of the allowances, saying it was unethical for journalists to be given money after attending or covering an event.

Some journalists gave back the allowance to the State House while others donated it to charity organisations. — Xinhua.
