corpse in a cattle pen.
Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Bulisani Bhebhe, confirmed the death of Nokutenda Chitekeshe of Nemuringa Village under Chief Chimoyo in Mutoko.
He said the mother, Alice Mudzengerere, was sleeping with the child before waking up and trying to strangle the infant.
“Upon noticing that the baby had not died, Mudzengerere took her outside and went to a cattle pen where she crushed the baby’s head on a rocky surface, killing her instantly,” said Insp Bhebhe.
He said a neighbour who heard the baby crying went on to investigate and later tipped off the police.
“An alert neighbour who heard Nokutenda crying went out to investigate, but Mudzengerere had already fled the scene leaving the baby’s corpse in a cattle pen,” said Insp Bhebhe.
“The neighbour mobilised other villagers and made a police report, leading to Mudzengerere’s arrest.”
Insp Bhebhe said it could not be established why Mudzengerere committed the offence.
He said investigations were still underway and Mudzengerere was expected to appear in court soon.
