committee of this year’s 10th All-Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique.
Mutsauki left ZOC at the beginning of this year to work as the Technical Director of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (Anoca) on a full-time basis.
He is based at the Anoca headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
Anoca oversee the staging of the All-Africa Games and they recently decided to “deploy” Mutsauki to Maputo where he will be working closely with the organising committee of this year’s Games (COJA) for the next four months.
The 10th All-Africa Games are scheduled to run from September 3 to 18 in Maputo.
Speaking to The Herald from Abuja yesterday, Mutsauki said he will be leaving for Maputo this weekend.
He will be in the Mozambican capital for the next four months where he will be working closely with the All-Africa Games organising committee to ensure the successful organisation and hosting of the continental sporting showcase.
“Following the visit to Maputo in February by a high-powered Anoca delegation, the director general of COJA-Maputo 2011, Jose’ Salomone Cossa, made a formal request to Anoca through the National Olympic Committee of Mozambique to have me in my capacity as the Anoca Technical Director seconded to COJA for the four-month period of June to September inorder to assist the organisers with organisational and technical aspects in the run-up to and during the Games.
“Anoca has approved the request and I will travel from Abuja to Maputo this coming weekend only returning to the Anoca headquarters after the Games.
“However, although I will be operating from Maputo, I will combine my normal duties as Anoca Technical Director and those assigned by COJA but it goes without saying that for the next four months greater focus will be on the Games,” Mutsauki said.
Mutsauki also said that the decision by Anoca to release him for this important assignment was appropriate and significant for a number of reasons. He said that COJA believe that he can add value through the organisational and technical aspects taking into account his managerial and technical competence as well as relevant experience.
“It is important for Anoca to be seen to be directly contributing to the successful hosting of the (10th) All-Africa Games.
“Furthermore as Anoca plans to continue hosting its own continental Games in the future, my involvement in Mozambique will yield appropriate Games experience for me and hence for Anoca.”
Last July, Anoca successfully hosted the inaugural African Youth Games in Rabat, Morocco, and Mutsauki was heavily involved in the co-ordination of those Games which served as useful preparation for the African athletes who participated in the inaugural Youth Games in Singapore a month later. The details of Mutsauki’s specific responsibilities in Maputo will be finalised when he gets to Maputo but he indicated that he will be working within the existing structures of COJA and he looks forward to this new challenge.
“I am confident that I will make a meaningful contribution even though indications are that the assignment will be quite demanding and I should be prepared to work long hours but this is not new territory for me and therefore I should be able to manage the situation and absorb the pressure.
“I have had a keen interest in the management of major Games for some time now and over the years I have accumulated a wealth of experience which I should put to good use. I have participated, in different capacities, in all five editions of the All-Africa Games from 1991 in Cairo to 2007 in Algiers.”
