THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has partnered with church leaders in Beitbridge to launch the Christian Community Police Network, a grassroots initiative aimed at strengthening community policing by mobilising faith-based organisations in the fight against crime.
The network was officially launched on Wednesday at Tshitaudze Business Centre in Mashavire and was attended by community members, stakeholders and church leaders drawn from across the district.
Speaking at the launch, Officer Commanding Beitbridge District, Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube, said the initiative comes at a time when Beitbridge is experiencing rapid population growth driven by increased economic activity, its strategic location along the North-South Corridor and its proximity to South Africa.
He said the Christian Community Police Network will focus on building trust between the police and communities, promoting mutual understanding through empathy and cooperation in addressing social challenges, and serving vulnerable members of society with compassion.
Chief Supt Ncube also presented certificates of attendance to 76 church leaders who completed a workshop held ahead of the launch, describing the training as a transformative experience.
“Today, as Beitbridge District, we gather to launch our new baby in the Community Policing initiatives category, namely the Christian Community Police Network,” he said.
“It is a milestone in our collective journey towards building safer and more compassionate communities through the involvement of church leaders and pastors who form the Christian fraternity.”
Chief Supt Ncube said effective policing extends beyond enforcing the law and requires active participation from communities.
He said the police recognise that their role is not only to enforce laws but also to serve and protect communities, adding that the Christian Community Police Network embodies that philosophy by bringing together police officers and community members in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.
Drawing on Christian teachings, Chief Supt Ncube cited 1 Peter 2:13-14, urging citizens to respect lawful authority while working collectively to promote peace and security.
“We invite all community members, faith leaders and police officers to join this initiative. Together, let’s work towards creating safer and more harmonious communities where everyone can thrive,” he said.
