Zimbabweans should continue to take heed of cautionary measures put in place by President Mnangagwa to tame the spread of Covid-19, Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association chairman Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa has said.

In an interview with The Herald yesterday, Ambassador Mutsvangwa said the disease was a war that Zimbabwe will win, but it will take greater resolve and resilience on the part of all Zimbabweans.

He commended President Mnangagwa for his total commitment to the fight against the global pandemic and urged Zimbabweans to place their trust in him.

“The war veterans urge Zimbabweans to fully entrust their goodwill on the President, the ruling party and the Government,” said Ambassador Mutsvangwa.

“The President just initiated follow-up inspection tours. He has nothing, but gracious gratitude to Zimbabweans. With grit and fortitude, they are bearing all the pain, deprivation and inconveniences that are the stock-in-trade of this abnormal state of affairs.”

Ambassador Mutsvangwa applauded the general populace for abiding by the lockdown rules.

He strongly warned people spreading fake news that it was not time for falsehoods and that they will face the full wrath of the law.

“This is not the time for fakes over facts,” said Ambassador Mutsvangwa. “War veterans say nefarious social media, mass print and electronic media, beware.

“The law is now in place to punish the wayward. You cannot say you were not warned. The response of the Zimbabwean populace to this righteous proclamation has not been disappointing at all.”

President Mnangagwa has also warned those spreading fake news that they would face stiff penalties.

Zimbabweans have in recent weeks fallen victim to fake news pertaining to deaths and infections relating to Covid-19, with the potential of causing alarm and despondency.

Ambassador Mutsvangwa commended Zimbabwean health officials on the frontline of fighting the disease both locally and in the Diaspora.

“This is a measure of global class competence by Zimbabweans,” he said.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), at least two million people have since tested positive to Covid-19, while over 128 000 have died.
