Juan Mutudza’s first-half brace was enough to hand CAPS United their first maximum points of the season as they dispatched disjointed Triangle United in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League at GreenFuel Arena yesterday.

CAPS United scored early in the game, capitalising on a defensive mistake by Triangle goalkeeper Prince Mujuru, whose clearance ricocheted off Juan Mutudza straight into the open net in the 16th minute.

Triangle defence were again caught at sixes and sevens following some slick passes between Tanaka Shandirwa, Nyasha Chintuli, and Kundai Benyu. The later’s exquisite pass was coolly converted by Mutudza, who completed his brace in the 26th minute.

Makepekepe continued their dominance and enjoyed a fair share of possession in the first half as Shandirwa won the midfield battle against Ali Sadiki and Munashe Bamara.

Triangle never recovered and surrendered at home. They have now conceded seven goals and scored once as they again failed to get a result, meaning they remain bottom of the log with nil points.

CAPS United coach Lloyd Chitembwe was happy with the result, and he felt the win was the turning point to their season after what he called a false start following a draw away and a defeat at home.

“We had to somehow find a way to start off our season. GreenFuel Arena is our second favourite ground. We faltered in our opening two games, drawing the first game here before losing at home against Scottland. At some point we had to find a way, and I am happy with the way we did our business today,” said Chitembwe.

Triangle United coach Luke Masomere was disappointed with the result, and his team are still rooted at the bottom of the league. They have failed to collect a single point out of the possible nine, and they have conceded seven in the process.

“We started the game very well, but we gave them an early lead from a schoolboy blunder by our goalkeeper. They scored again a few minutes later as CAPS United capitalised on another error from our defence.

“I think the international break will be important to us in the sense that I have quite a number of injured players, and the break will give them more time to recover as we prepare for our next fixture against Ngezi Platinum Stars.”
