The Mutupo Golf Tournament 2023 was launched at Royal Harare Golf Club yesterday.

The tournament is scheduled to be staged in nine provinces and will start on February 17 at Royal Harare Golf Club.

The tournament received a major boost with the Surrey Group, Proton and Lake Harvest coming on board as brand partners of the tournament.

The tournament does not limit the number of golfers who represent a totem, but only the top four from each totem will be considered.

Surrey Group national sales and marketing manager, Ranganayi Zihumo, who was also representing the other brands, said golf is a unique sport mainly associated with mature and professional people, who are good custodians and ambassadors of the country’s values and identity.

“It’s a unique sport and also most of the people who play golf are mature and professional. We want to be associated with those people and also to cement our culture on mutupo so that even the young generation will understand and value mutupo. That is why we said let’s come on board and work together with these guys,” he said.

Tournament coordinator, Ephraim Mashingaidze, said the door is still open for all golfers who want to represent their totems.

“We are inviting all golfers to come and play representing their totems. We also have quite a good number of corporates coming in to partner us. We will be hosting the tournament in nine provinces, with only Matabeleland South missing because they don’t have a golf course,” he said.

“We had a good response. We have 120 golfers on board and the field is overflowing but it’s still open to golfers who want to participate.”

Ishmael Chibvunye, who is representing defending champions, the Hungwe totem, said he is expecting all the Hungwes to come and defend their title.

“We are the defending champions of the Mutupo Golf Tournament after beating 21 other mutupos that participated. As usual, we are on top of the food chain as Hungwe.

“I am expecting all the Hungwes to come and defend our honour. Most of our members are practicing to make sure that we defend this tournament,” he said.
