AS the year draws to an end, karateka Justice Mutyoramwendo is optimistic of his future after claiming his first silver medal at an international competition this year.
The promising karateka had a fruitful season, winning a silver medal at the 28th Dragon Cup International Karate Friendship last month in Japan, which he said was a dream come true as he had always wanted to leave a mark at the international stage.
The tournament is organised by the World Kyokushin Kaikan International Karate Organisation.
Prior to his trip to Japan, he had defended his title in the Men’s Open division at the Limpopo Shinkyokushinkai Karate Annual Championship in South Africa.
Mutyoramwendo said his focus next year will be on major international tournaments.
“Next year I want to set the bar high. I believe I can go far; I just want to target major tournaments, especially international events.
“I want to be a world champion in 2025. We are targeting a world tournament next year in Bulgaria, in April. So, we are preparing for Bulgaria now.”
After having a feel for the competition at an international tournament for the second time since he began his journey in karate, Mutyoramwendo believes he stands a better chance going forward because of the exposure and experience.
“So next year in Bulgaria I am going for the title because now I know how to fight on the international stage. I know what to expect when I go for major competitions,” said Mutyoramwendo.
The promising karateka who trains under the International Karate Organisation (IKO) Nakamura Zimbabwe branch chief Tawanda Mufundisi said he has had a successful year as he reflected on the just-ended season.
And is looking forward to the future.
“It has been a very successful year because I was able to realise some of the dreams that I always wished for.
“And I can say now I am on the peak . . . I am very happy because now I am on the peak, and my profile is growing. I believe I am going far.
“So, I am very happy, and I feel honoured and at the same time we are recognised worldwide. I am very grateful.
“I believe I have achieved my goals for this year because everything I prayed for and wanted, everything I was working on, I have achieved.
“The main target was the Japan tournament. So, I managed to scoop a silver medal in Japan, so I can just say it was very successful and I managed to achieve my goals,” said Mutyoramwendo.
The Zimbabwe Karate Union recently wrapped up their season with the Champion of Champions tournament in Harare.
