ZIMBABWE’S Clinton Muunga missed out on the men’s 100m semi-final in the World Athletics Under-20 Championships yesterday when he came seventh in Heat 1 in 10.79 seconds at Kasarani Stadium.
The first three in each heat and the next six fastest qualify for the semi-final.
Going into the race, Muunga had one of the leading times in his heat of 10.38 seconds, but he found the going tough when finishing last in Heat 1.
The heat was won by Nigerian Godson Oke Oghenebrume in 10.35 seconds. He was followed by Canada’s Almond Small in a time of 10.54 seconds and Yeykell Eliu Romero of Nicaragua in 10.60 seconds.
Eduard Kubelik of Czech Republic was fourth in 10.66 seconds and Iraq’s Falah Al-Khazaali was fifth in 10.75 seconds.
In sixth place was Brazil’s Igor Clemente Medeiros in a time of 10.77 seconds. There were six heats in the men’s 100m first-round.
Muunga is now shifting his focus to the 200m event scheduled for tomorrow.
