“Mvurwi town has now become the cleanest town in the Mashonaland Province, maybe even the whole country, a testimony to the hard work of the council and the community,” said Mr Liberty Mugadza an EMA official.
The EMA official said this during a tour that aimed to highlight to the rest of the country environmental initiatives in the town.
A Mvurwi Town Council official, Mr Takafanana Chirikumarara, attributed the success to strong community involvement.
“The community is very much involved in the programme. We have school children would do clean-ups around their schools regularly, the elderly who sweep and vendors who take active interest to clean their stalls and bus ranks,” he said.
In addition, the town council has increased the number of bins to help manage waste in the town.
“We identified areas where people dump litter the most and built 12 communal bins in those positions. We also placed smaller bins in and around the town so that people will not have any reason to dump litter anywhere,” Mr Chirikumarara said.
