FORMER Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari has been ranked the best Zimbabwean striker to play in the South African Premiership.
Zimbabwe has over the years fed the South African Premiership with top class strikers and Mwaruwari, who spent the greater part of his career in Europe, is the cream of the crop.
According to South African Diski365 reports, the top five is made up of Mwaruwari, followed by Knowledge Musona, Gilbert Mushangazhike, Tendai Ndoro and Kingston Nkatha respectively.
A forceful striker during his days, Mwaruwari made a name for himself while at South African side Jomo Cosmos from 1999 to 2001. The former
Warriors captain scored 20 goals after making 45 appearances for the club.
He joined Switzerland’s Grasshoppers on loan in 2001 before playing for Auxerre in France.
Mwaruwari then moved to England where he played for Manchester City, Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth.
He scored 20 goals in 87 appearances for Portsmouth and three goals for Blackburn Rovers in 18 appearances.
After spending three years with Manchester City, the striker had a tally of four goals in 23 appearances.
In 2012, he came back to South Africa to join Chippa United and later on joined Bidvest Wits.
However, Mwaruwari might be easily surpassed as the top Zimbabwean striker to play in the ABSA by Tendai Ndoro who is the current top goal scorer in the league.
Ndoro’s goal scoring record since making his PSL debut with Mpumalanga Black Aces in the 2013/2014 season is seven goals in 17 starts and seven goals in 26 starts in the 2014/2015 season.
With Orlando Pirates, Ndoro had 10 goals in 16 starts in 2015/2016 season while in the 2016/2017 season, he has scored 12 goals in 15 starts in all competitions.
He is expected to continue where he left off when Orlando Pirates resume their Premiership campaign next year.
