In his acceptance speech read on his behalf by a member of the Benjani Mwaruwari Foundation, Mr Taurai Muzanenhamo, the former Warriors captain, said he was honoured to be an ambassador of a life serving campaign.
“I feel honoured because blood is life and so, in effect I am a Life Ambassador,” he said.
Mwaruwari said his new national role was in tandem with tenets of the Benjani Mwaruwari Foundation to offer means to better life for Zimbabweans. Mwaruwari appealed to all Zimbabweans to donate blood as it is a critical component in human life.
“Let me start my duty right away and appeal to all Zimbabweans to donate blood not just today as we launch World Blood Donor Day, but throughout the year,” he said.
Mwaruwari will join other brand ambassadors from music, media and beauty industries to encourage Zimbabweans to donate blood.
Commemorations for the National Blood Donor Day will be held in Sakubva, Mutare, running under the theme: “Every blood donor is a hero”.
NBSZ spokesperson Ms Esther Massundah said the day was meant to motivate more individuals to become regular voluntary unpaid donors and recognise the unique role played by blood donors. She said although the national commemorations will be held in Mutare, there will also be provincial events to mark the day.
