FORMER Zimbabwe international Benjamin Mwaruwari has issued a passionate challenge to the Warriors urging them to step up their game and aim for the knockout stage of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals.
The prestigious tournament will take place in Morocco featuring the top 24 teams from across the continent.
The Warriors secured their spot in this December’s finals finishing as runners-up to Cameroon in Group J.
In a candid interview last night, Mwaruwari emphasised the importance of the team’s performance against formidable opponents particularly urging them to aim for victory against Egypt, the previous champions.
The Warriors find themselves in a tough group alongside Angola, Egypt, and South Africa.
“If we are to be counted among the best in Africa, we must fight to advance to the later stages of such competitions. I challenge the boys to overcome Egypt, who are the favourites.
“A win against them will set us up for success, withdrawal or even outright victories further solidifying our path to the next round. At that point, it truly becomes anyone’s game,” said Mwaruwari.
Reflecting on his own experience, Mwaruwari recalled being part of the Warriors squad that faced disappointment in the first round of the Afcon tournament in Egypt back in 2006. He remains optimistic about the team’s prospects noting that with nearly a year until the finals, there is ample time for preparation.
“We have up to a year to prepare. The coaches can explore various options, engage in friendlies, and participate in other tournaments to refine the squad for Morocco,” he added. With the Cosafa Cup and World Cup qualifiers on the horizon, Mwaruwari believes these events will provide critical opportunities for the Warriors to bond and build momentum before the tournament in December.
The recent draw for the Afcon finals was attended by newly-elected Zifa president Nqobile Magwizi, highlighting the importance of this event for Zimbabwean football.
