A 30-year-old Mwenezi man has been arrested on allegations of killing his wife and attempting to kill his mother-in-law by setting the kitchen they were sleeping in on fire.

It is alleged that while the victims were trying to escape, Trust Bhonde struck them with a hoe, killing his wife, while her mother became unconscious.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said, “The ZRP confirms the arrest of Trust Bhonde aged 30 in connection with a case of murder and attempted murder which occurred in Sikomo Village, Mwenezi, on January 12 in which the suspect’s wife, Nollen Rivete aged 27 died.

“The suspect allegedly set ablaze the kitchen in which his wife and his mother-in-law, Manyuke Sasai (50), were sleeping,” he said.

“Subsequently, the suspect struck his mother-in-law on the head with a hoe before hitting his wife several times on the head as they escaped from the burning hut.

“Sasai sustained head injuries and became unconscious while Rivete succumbed to her head injuries.”
