A Mwenezi man has been arrested for allegedly stealing a cash box containing US$20 000 from a Fawcett cash-in-transit vehicle along the Masvingo-Beitbridge highway.
Kelvin Chisandako (24) of Mangwawo Village under Chief Mawarire allegedly stole the cash box after he was offered transport by a Fawcett cash-in-transit team at Lutumba in Beitbridge on October 16.
The cash-in-transit vehicle was carrying cash from Beitbridge to Mutare when they offered Chisandako transport along the way.
Chisandako allegedly went on a property-buying spree after stealing the cash, resulting in suspicious villagers alerting the police and leading to his arrest last Sunday.
According to Masvingo provincial deputy police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Masauso Patinyu, the suspect admitted that he stole the cash box.
Chisandako was seated at the back of the Fawcett vehicle with another passenger and allegedly took the cash box when he disembarked at Mwenezi turn-off.
Assistant Inspector Patinyu said police detectives recovered bags of cement and other building materials, a Toyota Aqua vehicle, clothes, and a cell phone that had been bought by Chisandako using the stolen money.
About US$600 and over 2000 rand were also recovered, together with the Fawcett cash box that was hidden in a small pit at Chisandako’s homestead.
